Pentagon Adviser Warns: Biden Admin Violating First Amendment in Military Crackdown

An adviser to the Pentagon’s new Counter-Extremism Working Group (CEWG) is warning of a campaign by the Biden administration to redefine “extremism” to include free speech the left doesn’t like.

Mike Berry, general counsel for First Liberty Institute and Marine Corps reservist told Breitbart News that he asked as an adviser to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin’s CEWG how they planned to redefine “extremism.”

Berry said they told him, “‘We’re still working on that, we’ll probably take the existing definition and expand it.’”

“The existing definition — which has been around for years and has developed really through a law enforcement perspective — it seems to be pretty adequate,” Berry said. “It sufficiently captures what needs to be captured. And if they want to expand it, they’re really going to expand it to things that have been traditionally protected by the Constitution.”

“I just don’t know how you can reconcile the Constitution with trying to criminalize someone’s thoughts and beliefs,” he added.

Berry also described the military’s newfound “wokeness” in a recent Washington Examiner op-ed.

“Ironically, the CEWG has yet to define what it means by ‘extremism,’” he wrote. “Extremism is usually defined as the threat or use of violence to achieve an ideological agenda. But the Pentagon is now poised to expand upon that definition to include constitutionally protected speech. In other words, sticks and stones may break our bones, but words are the biggest threat.”

Berry admitted they he may face retribution for “sounding the alarm” on the CEWG’s plans to violate the Constitution.

“Some have warned me that simply writing this article will likely result in my removal from the CEWG, or possibly even the Marine Corps, in which I continue to proudly serve as a reservist,” he wrote.

“But I love my country too much not to sound the alarm. And if my love of America is what leads to my removal, then so be it, as long as my discharge papers state ‘discharged for love of country,’” he added.

This comes after former Space Force Commander Matthew Lohmeier was demoted for sounding the alarm on the military’s “neo-Marxist” Critical Race Theory push.

“There were videos being sent out to every base, service member, that we were asked to watch in preparation for our extremism down days and discussions on race in which we were taught that the country was evil, that it was founded in 1619 and not 1776, and that whites are inherently evil,” Lt. Col. Lohmeier said on Hannity last month.
