The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office is currently conducting an investigation into an officer-involved shooting that occurred Sunday evening in Sarasota.

Deputies initially responded around 5:00 p.m. for a report of a battery in the 4000 block of Dyer Lane. Before units arrived on scene, the suspect left the original incident location armed with a knife. After a short search of the area, deputies located the suspect on foot near the intersection of Dyer Lane and Corey Road. The suspect immediately confronted deputies brandishing a knife. Deputies made verbal commands for the suspect to drop the knife, however she continued to advance. A Taser was deployed to subdue the suspect but was ineffective. The suspect continued to ignore commands, and a second deputy then shot the suspect with his agency-issued weapon. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect is identified as 63-year-old Adrean Stephenson. Next of kin has been notified. No one else was injured during the incident. The investigation is ongoing.
