North Port:TRIM notice goes out with an error that may indicate a higher proposed tax rate

** Updated Note from the City of North Port

Many residents and business owners in North Port are receiving their TRIM “Truth-in-Millage” Notices from the Sarasota County Property Appraiser’s Office. While the notice is accurate in what is being proposed this year, the notices are not accurately reflecting last year’s Non-Ad Valorem final assessments. These are Road and Drainage, Solid Waste and Fire Rescue Special Assessment Districts.

For an accurate reflection of your taxes from last year to what is being proposed this year, please visit the Tax Collectors website at https://fl-sarasota.publicaccessnow.com/PropertyTax.aspx. Type in your address, click “Bills Paid”. You can see your entire history and compare.

In actuality, North Port City leaders have worked diligently to keep taxes and assessments from further impacting our residents and business owners this year. The proposed maximum Millage Rate has been reduced by the City Commission. It will be finalized on September 17th.

TRIM NOTICES — Like many of you, I received my TRIM notice this week. I immediately noticed something was wrong. I knew there is no way my taxes are proposed to go up around $200 – especially with no changes in my property values. I alerted the Acting City Manager to the error I found and it was confirmed. Be sure to click the pictures below for the full picture.

The “red circle” states the FINAL tax rate and taxes last year.

The “blue circle” states ad valorem and non-advorem totals for last year– this amount is incorrect. The taxes I paid last year were $1,192.12 (black circle on the tax bill)

The “green circle” shows the proposed, key word — PROPOSED total taxes for your November tax bill $1,221.70.

Comparing the “blue circle” amount and the “green circle” amount it sure appears to be a $194.58 increase in taxes! This is FALSE. When you compare your property taxes that were actually paid last year (the black circle), to the PROPOSED total (green circle), the actual PROPOSED increase is $29.19. If you don’t have a copy of last year’s tax bill, you can use this link https://fl-sarasota.publicaccessnow.com/PropertyTax.aspx to look it up.

I’m not sure how this error happened, but I wanted to assure you the TRIM notice has an error. Everyone’s tax bill is different based on individual unique circumstances. Hope this helps clears up the confusion! I hope I explained this well enough to understand. If you have questions, please ask!
