FEMA resources available to North Port residents affected by Hurricane Ian

FEMA has made a number of free disaster assistance resources available to aid the residents of North Port impacted by Hurricane Ian.

The fastest way to apply is through DisasterAssistance.gov. Impacted residents may also apply through the FEMA mobile app or by calling the FEMA Helpline at 1-800-621-3362 (TTY 800-462-7585). To apply in person, visit the Disaster Recovery Center at the Shannon Staub Public Library located at 4675 Career Lane, North Port. DRC hours are 9 a.m. through 6 p.m. every day.

FEMA’s Individuals and Households Program (IHP) provides financial and direct services to eligible individuals and households affected by Hurricane Ian, who have uninsured or underinsured necessary expenses and serious needs. Residents may apply for the IHP Program through the FEMA channels listed above.

Disaster Distress Helpline is set up to help people experiencing emotional distress related to Hurricane Ian. Call the at 1-800-985-5990, visit DisasterDistress.samhsa.gov, or text 66746 to receive crisis counseling and support.

Operation Blue Roof provides homeowners and permanently occupied rental properties with fiber-reinforced sheeting to cover their damaged roofs until arrangements can be made for permanent repairs. Operation Blue Roof is a free service designed to protect property, reduce temporary housing costs, and allow residents to remain in their homes following Hurricane Ian. The initial sign up window will conclude on Oct. 23. You may also apply for Operation Blue Roof at the physical Disaster Recovery Center.

The Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (D-SNAP) provides food assistance for individuals and families impacted by Hurricane Ian and who are not receiving food assistance benefits through the regular Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). In partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, D-SNAP is implemented by the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF). SBA Loans The SBA offers disaster assistance in the form of low interest loans to businesses, nonprofit organizations, homeowners, and renters located in regions affected by declared disasters. The SBA also provides eligible small businesses and nonprofit organizations with working capital to help overcome the economic injury of a declared disaster. Transitional Sheltering Assistance (TSA) is a FEMA program for eligible survivors in need of temporary, short-term accommodations when other housing options are not available. Residents may apply for the TSA Program through the FEMA channels listed above.

FEMA disaster assistance applicants can be found ineligible for a variety of reasons. Below are the top 5 reasons for FEMA assistance denial.

  1. Insurance coverage for the loss
  2. Damages may not rise to the need of federal assistance
  3. The damaged home may not be a primary residence
  4. FEMA assistance would constitute a duplication of benefits from other sources
  5. Inspectors have been unable to reach applicants at the contact information provided
