The Venice City Council on Tuesday, July 12 approved a contract for the purchase of a 5-acre property located on East Venice Avenue next to the Venice Police Department (Public Safety Facility) for the relocation of Venice Fire Station 2. The purchase price for the property is $1.75 million, with funding coming from the 1-cent sales tax.

This facility will function as the headquarters for Venice Fire Rescue as well as one of three deployment facilities for fire and rescue services. Conveniently, the City’s primary Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is located in the police facility, and Fire Chief Frank Giddens is the City’s EOC Director. As both departments lead the City’s response to emergencies, the location offers opportunities to share resources, collaborate in training, and share infrastructure needs.

One of Council’s top priorities for fiscal year 2023 was the acquisition of land to relocate Fire Station 2. The current Fire Station 2 building is located at 200 N. Grove St. Built in 1989, the station is outdated, poorly situated for effective response capability, and is located in a flood zone.

“I would like to take this opportunity to recognize City Council for their support and directive in seeking land for the relocation of Station 2,” Chief Giddens said. “This is a great milestone for the City, the Fire Department and our citizens. The geographical location presents many positive aspects including but not limited to response capability and areas of coverage, to strengthening the City’s emergency management plan and continuity of operations during declared emergencies.”

The City will formally close on the E. Venice Ave. property in the next several months, and will then begin the conceptual design process.
