An organization with the same subject line and text is pushing for Venice to mandate mask in and outside
A clarification from the city. I wanted to note that you can tell by the way they emails are sent in, that it is an organized approach. This is not unocommon and something that happens on many issues. Groups that favor or are against an initiative will push for all their followers or members to email the city. They will give them an outline that can be followed or talking points. From the city: Hope you’re doing well. I saw your post re: the supposed email “movement” regarding masks and wanted to clarify that each email received has its own subject line and almost every email has a different subject line. The mayor has a response for emails that is to be provided when an email is addressed to city council as a whole. So, “Sunshine/Council” is the subject line from the mayor’s response, not the individual’s emails. This was to avoid any sunshine violations because if the mayor provided his opinion on an email, that would prohibit any other council member from responding with a different opinion. I hope this clears it up.

There appears to be a movement by some group to inundate the City of Venice mail server with request to mandate mask wearing inside and out. Nothing like tanning with a mask on……..
The subject line is the same: Sunshine/council. The text of the emails very, but they all have the same message of the need for a nanny state and mandating mask, which have been proven unhealthy. I state that from the cutting off of oxygen, to the fact that people wearing clothe mask think they are invincible to the virus. I still as the same question, if you are wearing the mask, why are you so concerned about those not wearing them? Doesn’t the mask have this super ability to protect you from viruses? With this logic, the non wearing mask person will only spread it among themselves and build up an immunity. Again, if you mask protects you, why are you trying to mandate it upon everybody else?
The former Mayor of Venice (Holic) sent a similar letter calling non mask wearing individuals inconsiderate and stated that he wears his wherever he goes. He actually stated that when he sees a non mask wearer, he runs the other way. Yet, I have seen him in the parking lot at the YMCA without his mask talking to the person he walks with (non family member) and at one point four individuals. Also, they were not social distancing or wearing mask, a bit hypocritical. In the same letter he went off on the county commissioners. I think people should remind him that his power ended the day his term as Mayor expired. He is not the only one, many Democratic leaders and “Consortium” members like Ed Martin and Fred Fraize have written in wanting more government intervention.
I will state that there are a couple letters against the mandate, but it is not an organized email campaign, like the one Holic and others are a part of, to mandate mask.
I had the virus and I can say it was no worse than a cold. The numbers are up, along with the testing. However, the fatality rate is dropping fast because there are so many people testing posative that are asymptomatic without any symptoms or minor symptoms. Sure it can be very bad or deadly, normally to the elderly or those with a compromised immune system. Just like the flu can be. Here are some stats from the CDC site at: https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/burden/preliminary-in-season-estimates.htm. There has been 24,000 – 62,000 flu deaths from 10.1.19 through 4.4.20 (7 months). Just like with the coronavirus, there have been a ton of flu hospitalizations within the same time from with a range of 410,000 to 740,00.

Mr. Mayor and council members, thank you for taking the time to read this, I am a first time writer to my city leaders. I am writing to urge your support of the wearing of masks in the city of Venice and for that matter county and state. I believe what our Director of our National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Dr. Anthony Fauci is saying…even though he is speaking into the wind his message is loud and clear. Wear masks indoors in public places and outdoors when you cannot social distance is the best way to avoid spreading or contacting the virus. Do it for yourself and the people around. We will be dealing with this for another 12 months or more. It will get worse before it gets better.
We are in significantly more danger today than before the lock down just a few months ago. Now thousands of people have the virus compared to a few back then. We have no tracking system to identify exposure to the virus enable us to avoid it at large. Our state is particularly vulnerable with so many active cases. The risk of exposure is all around us. I see more people taking it seriously by wearing masks in Publix and other places. I think the time is right to lead the community to do the right thing. I believe small business owners would be relieved with a mask requirement as they are reluctant to implement one on their own. When their employees get sick they have to close. I won’t shop in a business where patrons aren’t wearing masks.
I understand the reluctance to mandate masks because it is difficult to enforce. I think little enforcement is required as most people will comply because it is clearly the right thing to do. People will quickly adopt and those that don’t will eventually get the message. You may recall when seat belts were made mandatory, most people complied and others were slow adopters but in the end many lives were saved. We look to you to lead and be the catalyst for change. I encourage you to do support a mask requirement in the city of Venice.
