At approximately 1:40 p.m. today, Saturday, Nov. 21, a truck with heavy construction equipment struck the underside of the Venice Avenue Bridge on the mainland side, knocking concrete from the structure. Venice Fire Rescue and Venice Police responded to the location at E. Venice Ave. and Seaboard Ave.

VPD has shut down the bridge in both directions to all traffic for an undetermined amount of time. Officials with Sarasota County and FDOT are being called in to inspect the bridge to determine if it is structurally sound. The truck driver, who did not realize the vehicle struck the bridge, was stopped in the area. No injuries were reported.

Alternate routes on and off the island are the Circus and KMI (Hatchett Creek) bridges at the south and north ends of Venice, respectively.
