Deputies arrested a convicted felon who had been discharging a firearm in a residential area, later finding multiple guns and drugs in his home.

Just after 2am on Saturday, May 17, deputies responded to a home on Hibiscus Dr. in Punta Gorda, FL after receiving a call stating someone was firing a gun. Upon arriving to the densely wooded area, deputies heard approximately 9 shots fired and observed someone carrying a flashlight and yelling nonsensically. The deputies attempted to make verbal contact with the individual, now identified as Curtis L. Robbins (12/17/1965), but were unsuccessful. Robbins was confirmed to be a convicted felon out of Michigan, though he failed to register as such in Charlotte County.

Again, contact with Robbins was attempted, and he responded by saying “Shoot me.”. Robbins walked toward the deputies and informed them that he would not be leaving his property, then walked away from them and laid down in a lawn chair. Through a public address system, deputies continued their attempts to get Robbins to peacefully surrender to no avail. Based on this, the deputies called for additional units to include SWAT, Aviation, K9, Major Crimes, and Crisis Negotiations. The subject then got up and entered a building, where he remained for a little more than half an hour.

Robbins eventually exited the building and was apprehended by deputies without further incident. A search warrant was obtained for the residence, where multiple firearms and ammunition, as well as spent casings, were located along with numerous rocks of a substance that tested positive for methamphetamine. The container with the suspected methamphetamine also contained Robbins’ Florida ID card.

“I am glad that this incident resolved without further violence, especially considering the individual’s state of mind when my teams arrived. We have seen too often how dangerous the combination of drugs and guns can be. I commend my deputies for their diligence and their patience in safely taking this man into custody.”

Sheriff Bill Prummell

Robbins was arrested and transported to the Charlotte County Jail on multiple charges, to include possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, failing to register as a convicted felon, possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine), and drug paraphernalia. He is being held with a bond of $32,500.
