Four men were arrested in the early morning hours of Thursday, February 27 after they were found actively committing a burglary at a business in Punta Gorda.
At approximately 1:30am on Thursday, February 27, a Charlotte County deputy was conducting a patrol of a business in Punta Gorda due to it having been burglarized the night before. As he approached the building, he could hear voices inside, when one of them suddenly shouted “Policia!” and four men ran to a pickup truck parked within the fenced-in area. The deputy ran back to his patrol vehicle as he reported the burglary to dispatch, asking for additional units in the area to help.
As more deputies responded and located the truck, it came to a stop and three of the suspects fled on foot. The fourth suspect was located in the bed of the truck. The three who ran were observed by Corrections deputies on the back of the Charlotte County Jail property before they continued toward Cheney Bros., Inc.
Deputies quickly established a perimeter with the help of Punta Gorda Police and Florida Highway Patrol. The Aviation Unit and K9 Unit were called to assist with locating the suspects. K9 Zoe picked up their scent and led deputies through water, woods, and over the fence of the CBI trailer lot. Inside the lot, K9 Rico led deputies directly to one trailer in which all three remaining suspects were located.
“I want to say how much I appreciate these individuals running directly to the Jail… it really makes the commute a lot easier for my deputies. Seriously, though, when criminals come to Charlotte County thinking that we aren’t paying attention or we’re just not anticipating their nonsense, they learn quickly that is not the case. I thank my deputies and our fellow law enforcement partners for their coordinated efforts in catching these suspects immediately.”
Sheriff Bill Prummell
The men were interviewed and provided a confession to the burglary. Through investigation, it was determined that all four had come from the Tampa area to commit the crime, knowing that the business had a vulnerability from the previous night’s burglary.
All four men were placed under arrest and charged with Burglary and Resisting without Violence.
