NORTH PORT, FL – North Port firefighters responded to a commercial fire in a restaurant at 12:25 p.m. on Wednesday. The call was to the Applebee’s restaurant in the 17500 block of Tamiami Trail. The calling party stated that smoke was coming from the vents in the dining area of the facility. Everyone was able to safely self-evacuate prior to the arrival of the fire department.

Arriving firefighters reported no smoke or flames visible from the exterior. Crews made their way inside and discovered light smoke inside the restaurant, but no active fire was initially found. A lengthy and thorough investigation utilizing thermal imaging cameras and physical labor to enable visual inspections ultimately resulted in a small fire being located in the duct work of the air handling system. Firefighters were able to use a small amount of water to extinguish the fire which greatly minimized loss.

A light odor of smoke remained inside the restaurant which management will work to remediate. There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters during this incident.
