Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office detectives and Crime Scene members are working a death investigation after a traffic stop led to the driver shooting himself.

This evening, a North Port Police Department officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle that began in North Port but ultimately ended just over the Charlotte County line near Eppinger Dr. and Palmer Ave. in Port Charlotte. As the NPPD officer approached the vehicle, he observed the driver had a firearm in his hand. The officer immediately backed away and began to give commands to the driver, who placed the weapon to his own head and pulled the trigger.

Law enforcement and EMS attempted lifesaving measures on the man, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

No members of law enforcement discharged their weapons at any time during this encounter. The investigation is being handled by the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office, with Major Crimes detectives and Crime Scene Units already on scene.

“This is never something we want to see happen, and there is no information right now that would provide any clarification for why it did. My thoughts are with this individual’s loved ones tonight as they seek the same answers. Please keep this man’s family in your prayers as the investigation continues.”
