A female inmate was pronounced dead at the hospital after she was found unresponsive in her cell with a piece of fabric around her neck.
At about 7:30pm on Saturday, May 31, a Charlotte County Jail inmate was discovered unresponsive in her cell. The inmate was identified as Jordan Michelle Richards (10/04/1995). The member who found Richards immediately called for additional help and CCSO Corrections staff began life-saving measures to include CPR and the deployment of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). EMS arrived and took over the rescue attempts until Richards was transported to a local hospital at 8:02pm. Unfortunately, she did not survive and was pronounced dead by hospital staff at 8:17pm. Her next of kin has been notified.
This is still an active investigation, and no further details are available at this time.
“It is always sad to see someone choose to take their own life, and my heart goes out to those who knew and loved her. Even if someone is incarcerated, their life matters. As my team investigates how this happened, I want to offer my sincere condolences to the family and friends of this young lady.”
Sheriff Bill Prummell
