A man has been arrested after shooting and killing a woman in his Port Charlotte home.
Around 3:30am on March 1st, 2025, the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call stating that a man had just shot a woman in his residence on McDill Drive in Port Charlotte following a domestic argument. Upon arrival, deputies found the suspect, identified as Jose Mogro (07/07/1957) in the master bedroom with the victim and a witness.
Mogro and the witness were detained and separated, then escorted outside the residence as deputies and EMS rendered aid to the victim. The victim, who had sustained a single gunshot wound to the chest, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The crime scene was secured, and Major Crimes detectives were called out to conduct an investigation.
During questioning, both Mogro and the witness provided similar statements regarding the incident. The victim left the residence in the afternoon the previous day and returned to the residence at around 2:00am. The victim was being loud, making noises, slamming doors, and keeping them awake. Mogro addressed the victim and told her to be quiet, but the victim didn’t listen. The suspect went back to his bedroom, closed and locked his door because he did not feel safe based on how the victim was acting. Approximately 20 minutes later, there was loud banging on the master bedroom door, which they believed to be the victim.
Due to the loud banging, Mogro armed himself with a firearm and went to the bedroom door. As he opened the door, he was immediately confronted by the victim who was swinging her arms and approaching him quickly. It was at this time that Mogro fired his gun, striking the victim in the chest.
“While the investigation is still active, I want to express my condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of the victim. This is a terrible situation and will certainly have an impact far beyond the residence on McDill Drive. I pray for peace for everyone involved and for our community.”
Sheriff Bill Prummell
Deputies placed Jose Mogro under arrest on a charge of Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon. As the investigation is ongoing, charges may be added or modified based on the findings. Mogro was transported to the Charlotte County Jail. At the time of this release, he is still being processed by Jail Intake personnel.
