Early Tuesday morning, around 3:30 a.m., North Port Police officers attempted to stop a driver suspected of operating a vehicle under the influence. The driver, later identified as 25-year-old Merald Onyemaechi, refused to pull over, leading officers on a high-speed chase before crashing into a garage on Lakeshore Circle in Charlotte County. Onyemaechi then ran from the scene, prompting a foot pursuit. With assistance from the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office, he was ultimately apprehended along U.S. 41.

Onyemaechi, a convicted felon currently on probation for Home Invasion Robbery with a Firearm, has been booked into the Charlotte County Jail. He faces multiple charges, including Driving with a Suspended License, Obstruction Without Violence, Fleeing to Elude, DUI with Property Damage, and Felon in Possession of a Firearm, after a gun and ammunition were recovered from his vehicle.

“While it was a hectic and dangerous situation, we are thankful that good police work resulted in taking this individual off the street. We are also thankful that nobody was hurt,” said North Port Police Chief Todd Garrison.
