A man is in jail after throwing a Molotov cocktail at an occupied vehicle in his driveway.
On Sunday, December 29, just before 8:30pm, deputies responded to a residence on Midway Blvd. in Port Charlotte after receiving a call from a man, identified as Jon Scott Warner (05/29/1963), who was having an argument with a female. Deputies spoke with both parties and determined the incident did not require an arrest but advised Warner of options available to him before they left.
Shortly before 2am the next morning, deputies received a new call from Warner in which he stated he suspects the female had taken his debit card and gone out with a friend. Warner is later heard on the phone saying, “Get back, get back, Molotov” and then no longer speaking to the deputy. The deputy then responded again to the Midway Blvd. residence.
Upon arrival, the deputy observed a fire in the driveway and noticed an overwhelming odor of gasoline. Contact was made with another man who advised that he had pulled into the driveway to drop off the female and Warner lit something on fire and threw it at his vehicle (while he was inside of it). The item hit the vehicle, burst into flames, and damaged the windshield as well as spilling out onto the driveway. The item was determined to be a Molotov cocktail, made with gasoline, a plastic bottle, and a wick.
“This could have been very, very bad for everyone involved. Thankfully, nobody was hurt in this reckless and dangerous act, but Mr. Warner will still be held accountable. Instead of being at home, he will ring in the new year at the Charlotte County Jail. Sadly, I don’t think he’ll get to see the ball drop tomorrow night.”
Sheriff Bill Prummell
Warner provided a confession and is being held at the Charlotte County Jail without bond on charges of arson and possession or manufacturing of a firebomb.
