Congratulations to VPD Capt. Andy Leisenring, who will be sworn in as the next Venice police chief when current Chief Charlie Thorpe retires Jan. 3. City Council approved Leisenring’s appointment by unanimous vote during Tuesday’s meeting.

Leisenring was promoted from lieutenant to captain on Jan. 25, 2022, the same day Thorpe was sworn in as police chief. He has been with the department since 2007 after starting his law enforcement career in Michigan.

Thorpe joined VPD in 2018 as a captain after retiring from a 28-year career with the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.
