This new metal recycling sorting facility in Nokomis is unbearable.

They requested permission from the county to operate as outdoor storage and display and got permission to do so. Also the ordinance related to that storage and the county’s definition of how material should be stored.

A scrap yard is a recycling facility, which by ordinance. If just sorting it needs to be on a 10 acre minimum parcel size (this is 1.34). or if recycling activities are being conducted then 35 Acres. Recycling machinery should not be located within 200ft of the boundaries (the lot is only 130 ft across) and the grab crane is considered recycling machinery. The employees told code enforcement that they were bringing in a crusher on sat (i did not see this arrive) but county staff and DEP confirmed this would not be permitted on this site. not that being tld they cant do anything has stopped them.

On Friday they were cited by code enforcement for operating without a business license and yet they stayed open and have balloons out today announcing their grand opening.

Scrappers are lined up along the road for hundreds of yards, turning it into a dangerous single lane road. busiest just before 8am and at 3-5pm where the line has blocked Colonia East. Kimble Lumber have told me they are losing business from vendors not being able to get through, and getting flat tires from the screws and nails in the road. USPS had to make 3 attempts to get through to deliver mail last thur due to the traffic. We had a real emergency situation in our street on sat afternoon, just two hours after they closed. had they been open the 7 emergency vehicles that responded would have been severely delayed.

Neighbors do not feel safe going outside when it is in operation due to an employee doing traffic control on the street all day. I certainly do not let my kids play outside while they are in operation.

The county say it could be months before they can do anything, but we simply don’t have that much time.
