Sarasota: Man found guilty of molesting a 13-year-old

We want to recognize the outstanding efforts of our Special Victims Unit (SVU) for their unwavering commitment and hard work in investigating this case which led to the arrest and prosecution of Chun Tong.
On February 24, 2022, Tong was arrested and charged with molesting a 13-year-old during a vacation with the child’s family in Sarasota in 2020. At that time, the family considered Tong a trusted family friend, unaware that he was grooming and abusing the child.
Earlier this month, a jury found Tong guilty of lewd or lascivious molestation of a child between 12 and 16 years of age, which could result in a sentence of up to 15 years. Tong will remain in custody until his sentencing, which is scheduled for December.
The work of SVU played a crucial role in safeguarding this child from further harm and stopping Tong from hurting others.
