Hurricane Milton-Venice update on trash collection, evacuations, sandbag stations and more

Francesco Abbruzzino, The Uncensored Report, LLC

EVACUATIONS

Sarasota County is urging the community to take Hurricane Milton seriously. The County will be calling for evacuations in Levels A and potentially Levels A and B ahead of the storm, which is expected to strengthen into a major hurricane before impacting our community.

If you live in Level A or B, a manufactured home community or a mobile or boat home, NOW is the time to implement your plan, whether it’s staying with a family member or friend in a different level or leaving the area. If you plan to leave the area, do so now. This will be one of the largest evacuations along our state’s west coast. If you do not live in Level A or B, a manufactured home community, or a mobile or boat home, now is the time to prepare your property and ensure you have your supplies, such as water, nonperishable food, and medicines ready for a minimum of seven days for each member of your family. Check on your neighbor – work together to prepare. Current projections have this being a major hurricane and impact for our community.

Sandbags are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Shovels will be provided. Limit 10 bags per vehicle.

Additionally, Sarasota County is offering self-service sandbags to residents on Monday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at South County Fleet Services, 4571 S.R. 776/Englewood Road, South Venice. Residents are limited to 10 bags per vehicle.

CANCELLATIONS

Oct. 7 – Hurricane Helene Resident Recovery Meeting, Venice Community Center

Oct. 8 – Venice City Council meeting, City Hall

SOLID WASTE/DEBRIS

City Solid Waste trucks are working as safely and quickly as possible in neighborhoods to remove bulk yard waste and other items from Hurricane Helene as Hurricane Milton approaches the region.
Trash, recycling and yard waste will be collected as usual for City of Venice residents on Monday, Oct. 7 and Tuesday, Oct. 8. There will be no collection of materials on Wednesday, Oct. 9 due to anticipated Milton impact. Thursday collection will be determined after assessing storm impacts.
The latest storm presents additional challenges for our community and first responders. Following trash collections, please secure garbage/recycling carts and other loose items around your home to help them from becoming airborne in high winds, posing an additional danger.
