Sarasota Police Chief Rex Troche has provided an update regarding the tragic crash that occurred Monday evening at approximately 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of 23rd Street and Maple Avenue, involving a Sarasota Police officer and an 8-year-old child on a dirt bike. The child remains hospitalized, and the Sarasota Police Department extends its heartfelt thoughts to the young boy and his family during this challenging time.

In alignment with our commitment to transparency, the Sarasota Police Department is releasing video footage from both the officer’s body-worn camera and an in-car camera from a different officer present at the scene. Please note, viewer discretion is advised as the footage may be difficult to watch and hear.

In the video update, Chief Troche explains the circumstances surrounding the crash, which occurred as the officer left the scene of an unrelated call for service. The child on the dirt bike entered the intersection at that moment. The Sarasota Police Department’s Traffic Unit is actively investigating this incident in collaboration with the Florida Highway Patrol to ensure a thorough and impartial review of all factors involved.
