A suspect is receiving medical care, pending physical arrest, after a shooting incident near the County line of Charlotte and Sarasota.

On the morning of September 18, 2024, the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of 1540 Chancellor Boulevard near the Charlotte County/Sarasota County border after receiving a call advising of gunshots. As deputies arrived, they quickly determined that the disturbance involved two subjects and gunfire was exchanged.

The victim was located on scene with injuries sustained in the shooting. The suspect had fled the scene on foot. An immediate search was conducted for the suspect, with assistance from the North Port Police Department. The suspect, identified as Anthony Gooden (12/02/1967), was swiftly located and also found with injuries sustained in the shooting. Both subjects were transported to hospitals for medical care.

“I want to thank the North Port Police Department for their quick assistance in this case, which allowed my team to stay focused on the investigation. It is unfortunate that this happened, but I appreciate the fast and appropriate response of law enforcement. I also know how frustrating the traffic in the area was once Tamiami Trail had to be closed. Thank you to the public for their patience and trust in us to get this sorted out as quickly as possible.”

Sheriff Bill Prummell
