A man was arrested on multiple charges after calling 911 threatening to shoot law enforcement officers, posting threats to social media, and several other charges to include battering a police dog.
A man identified as Matthew Mead (02/18/1986) called Charlotte County Dispatch and asked to speak to a sergeant so that he could ensure law enforcement was “on the same page” as him.
Once connected with an on-duty sergeant, Mead proceeded to express his distaste for law enforcement after receiving multiple traffic infractions in Volusia County. He promised the sergeant that he would shoot any law enforcement that he came in contact with from that point forward. Shortly after making these phone calls, Mead made several Facebook posts in which he tagged the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office, again threatening to shoot law enforcement.
On Wednesday September 4th, members from the CCSO K9 unit, Criminal Investigations Division, Warrants Unit, and STAR Unit attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Matthew Mead. Refusing to stop, Mead fled in the direction of his home. After a brief pursuit, stop sticks were utilized, flattening his vehicle’s tire. Mead continued to flee until reaching his destination on Mandy St., where more deputies were already waiting. Mead exited his vehicle near his residence and ran from deputies.
Mead refused to comply with deputy commands to surrender, and instead tried to enter his trailer, at which point he was tased. While trying to pull the taser prongs out, Mead pushed and kicked a deputy. Mead then grabbed a chair and began to swing it. After many attempts to gain Mead’s compliance, a CCSO K9 was deployed. Mead struck the K9 with a chair and grabbed him by the collar, but then let go. Once the K9 was safely out of the way, Mead was tased again and successfully placed under arrest. Deputies noticed plastic baggies of marijuana in plain view and discovered a firearm inside the trailer during his arrest. With Mead being the subject of an existing protection order, a search warrant was obtained, and the firearm was ultimately removed.
“If you make threats to harm – and especially to kill – my deputies, you will be held accountable. Thankfully, this individual was taken into custody before he was able to follow through on any of his threats. K9 Banzai is doing well and I commend my deputies who showed tremendous restraint in how they apprehended the suspect, despite his violent attacks and attempts to resist.”
