At approximately 6 a.m. today, Devan Carroll, 35, was arrested in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash that occurred earlier this year in the City of Sarasota. Carroll was apprehended by Manatee County Sheriff’s deputies at his residence. He is charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death, a first-degree felony.
On the night of February 29, 2024, shortly after 11:30 p.m., the Sarasota Police Traffic Unit responded to a crash at the intersection of Cocoanut Avenue and 2nd Street. An 81-year-old woman, who had been celebrating her birthday at the Opera, was struck by a silver Ford F-150 Platinum truck while crossing the street in a clearly marked crosswalk. Surveillance footage shows the truck hitting the woman as she crossed the street. The driver then fled the scene, and the victim tragically died on site.
Approximately 18 hours after the crash, the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office located and seized the truck from a residence in Palmetto. Through a thorough investigation, it was confirmed that Carroll had been driving the vehicle that evening, as he was pulled over by deputies just hours before the incident.
Carroll is currently awaiting extradition to the Sarasota County Jail. The attached Probable Cause Affidavit and booking photo provide further details on the investigation and charges.
