On Wednesday evening, Sarasota County Public Utilities responded to a wastewater spill caused by an issue with the plug valve in the lift station vault at 6021 Midnight Pass Road. Crews were able to stop the spill within 15 minutes of arrival. Approximately 500 gallons of wastewater spilled, and 500 were recovered. Cleanup and notifications are proceeding per protocol. No surface waters were impacted, and no sampling is necessary.

On Friday afternoon, crews responded to a call of a manhole spill in the Deer Creek neighborhood. Staff traced the cause of the spill to the CCU Master Lift Station where the pumps were not operating at a capacity sufficient to evacuate the collection system. Staff manually operated the pumps to evacuate the collection system and stop the spill. After investigation, staff identified a surge protector in the pump control system had failed and installed a temporary fix. Staff is scheduling permanent repairs.
Approximately 5,000 gallons of raw sewage spilled from the manhole and approximately 17,300 gallons of combined wastewater and stormwater were recovered. Notifications and clean-up are proceeding per protocol. Sampling will be required as surface bodies were affected.
