Charlotte Sports Park is back in business! We held media day Thursday to show off the repairs we’ve been making since Hurricane Ian severely damage much of the sports park.
We repaired damage to the practice and stadium fields, batters eyes and backstops. The Major League clubhouse, Building A, Building B and the press tower all suffered water intrusion. The interior of each building has since been mitigated and rebuilt along with complete roof replacements. The main stadium and baseball field suffered a total loss to the sports lighting and roof structure covering the stadium seats. The roof was rebuilt and all new LED stadium lights and light poles were installed.
The budget for the repairs was more than $17.5 million, mostly covered by insurance.
Many thanks to the Wharton Smith team that made the repairs and came out today to tour the stadium with our local media outlets from ABC 7 in Sarasota and Fort Myers, Fox 4, NBC 2, WINK, WENG radio and the Sun Newspapers.
Thanks to our colleagues from the Community Services and Facilities departments for leading the tour, doing interviews and sharing their stories of recovery. Thanks to the Rays CSP team for accommodating our media friends and providing insight into the busy ramp up for spring training.
Pitchers and catchers report Feb. 13 and the first spring training home game is Feb. 24 against the Atlanta Braves.
