City of Sarasota, FL: The City Commission recognized the first three businesses in the new Legacy Business Program on Tuesday, Feb. 20.

The inaugural members are Icard MerrillCaragiulo’s and D & R Automotive. These businesses have all been providing services and jobs to community members for anywhere between 35-70 years.

The City Commission adopted this new program in August 2023 to honor local businesses for the contributions they make to the overall culture, economic development and prosperity of our city. To be considered, a business must meet the following eligibility criteria: being for-profit, operating in the city limits for at least 20 cumulative years and operating a storefront where customers can make purchases or receive services.

“After seeing and experiencing a legacy business program in San Antonio, Texas during a National League of Cities conference, I felt strongly about creating something similar in Sarasota,” said Vice Mayor Jen Ahearn-Koch, who presented the concept to City of Sarasota staff and fellow City Commissioners. “I’m very enthusiastic about our new Legacy Business Program. Celebrating long-term businesses is a point of pride and this program is a special way to showcase the special history of these businesses. Visitors and residents will be able to identify these businesses and hopefully patronize them knowing they will have an experience that’s uniquely Sarasota.”

Each company recognized as a Legacy Business will experience multiple benefits, such as:

  • A proclamation from the City Commission at a Commission meeting
  • A branded window decal
  • Being entered into a Legacy Business Registry
  • Being featured on a public-facing GIS map on the Legacy Business Program website
  • Posts on the City of Sarasota social media platforms

To apply to become a Legacy Business, fill out the application form on the Legacy Business Program website. Applications are accepted and certified on a rolling basis (Oct. 1 – Sept. 30). Once the application has been received, it will be evaluated against the eligibility criteria.
