Subject: 2023 US Recycling PM2.5 Toxic Air Pollution Monitoring Status

Monitoring US Recycling for Toxic PM2.5 Particulate Air Pollution
Status as of December 31, 2023

Project Goal:

Obtain “hard scientific evidence” of PM2.5 particulate pollution from US Recycling to support community efforts to force USR to run “cleaner” operations.

Our ultimate objective is maintaining pressure on USR owners to sell the industrial site for development compatible with the surrounding neighborhood.

Status:
The PM2.5 monitoring system consisting of 7 PM2.5 monitors, 3 video cameras and 1 weather station has been installed at several locations surrounding US Recycling and is transmitting data by WiFi to the cloud.

Key observations (“hard evidence”) is presented in the attached document including the following:
1. US Recycling continues to emit extremely high PM2.5 levels exceeding 100-150 mg/m3. These levels are definitely dangerous to the health of our residents. The highest level observed to date was 181 mg/m3 on Dec. 21.
2. US Recycling is operating at night after dark when neighbors wouldn’t notice and complain about the dust clouds containing harmful PM2.5 levels. Last night Dec. 30-31, USR continued operating past midnight generating harmful PM2.5 levels up to 50 mg/m3 for nearly 5 hours. The dust cloud and noise was personally observed after 11 pm.
3. PM2.5 particles in dust clouds outside will migrate inside to adversely affect the health of residents and workers. Screenshots show a 31 mg/m3 PM2.5 outside peak that resulted in an elevated PM2.5 peak after approximately 2 hours inside the Robertson’s Billiards and Spa store.
