Peggy Hinkle, 53, of Sarasota, is facing two charges of Attempted Murder following a shooting in the 1100 block of Sylvan Drive, Sarasota, at about 5:45 p.m. on Wednesday, June 7, 2023.

Victim 1, an adult man, went to 1124 Sylvan Drive, Sarasota, to gather his belongings. Victim 2, another adult man, accompanied Victim 1 so he would not be alone. The two people noticed Hinkle’s vehicle parked in the garage.

When entering the house, one of the victims video recorded while they were inside. Hinkle confronted the two victims armed with a handgun and attempted to shoot one of them. Hinkle pulled the trigger, but the handgun did not go off. The two victims were able to wrestle the gun from Hinkle’s hands. The victims fled from the house.

The two victims ran outside to get into a car and leave. Hinkle shot at the car as the victims drove away. Hinkle got into her own car and started to follow the victims. The victims pulled into the parking lot of a business in the 1600 block of North Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. Hinkle followed them into the parking lot, and the two vehicles crashed. Hinkle started shooting at the car the victims were in. A bullet hit Victim 2 in the head. Victim 1 drove away, and Victim 2 said to go to the Sarasota Police Department rather than the hospital. Hinkle did not continue to chase the victims and returned home.

Sarasota Police officers responded to 1124 Sylvan Drive, Sarasota, for a report of a barricaded woman believed to be armed and made threats to harm herself and others. The SWAT Team, Crisis Negotiation Unit, Emergency Response Team, Drone Unit, Patrol Division, and Criminal Investigations Division responded to the area. The Sarasota Police Department’s Marine Patrol Unit was staged in the water behind the home, and the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office flew Air 1 over the scene. Sarasota County Emergency Services also responded to the scene.

While officers were negotiating with Hinkle at the home on Sylvan Drive, the two victims arrived at Sarasota Police Department Headquarters. They were in a damaged car. Victim 2 was rushed to Sarasota Memorial Hospital to be treated for the head injury sustained in the shooting. His injuries are non-life threatening.

The Sarasota Police Department Crisis Negotiation Unit was crucial in speaking with Hinkle and convincing her to surrender peacefully. Hinkle surrendered peacefully at about 7:45 p.m. and was taken to the Sarasota County Jail. She’s currently being held without bond.
