A Nokomis neighborhood struggle with sinkholes, dried up water wells, neighbors using their yard as a toilet and the local “meth house”

My friend asked me to come out to Kenwood, just off Edmondson in Nokomis.  He wanted to show me the sink holes that started appearing, after Pulte began to pull from the water system, in the new development they are building out.  This is the old orange fields, off Albee Farm Rd.

We walked around and he showed me a couple of the sinkholes.  Unfortunately, most were filled in or fixed, like on the next street over, where the sinkhole impacted the roadway.    So, I could only see two small sink holes.  He told me that he has talked to the county about it and the county told him that Pulte paid for a consultant to study the situation, to see if their drilling caused the sinkholes.  Their consultant came back stating that there is no connection between Pulte’s drilling, the sinkholes or the wells drying up.  My friend is not sure why the county did not have an independent study of the situation, versus going with the analysis of Pulte’s consultant.

So, we walked around, and I gathered some photo’s, which are posted within this article.  However, another issue caught my attention.

My friend lives behind a huge 8ft fence, which surrounds his home.  He has cameras upon a tree monitoring the street and two others in different directions.  He has them because the area is a known area for what many refer to as “meth heads”.  A few individuals that have been arrested for drugs have provided the address to a home on the small street, such as the young lady that was arrested for coke last night in front of the home and another individual that was arrested for meth possession.  That individual was there today.  I saw him as he left the home and I can say that without a doubt, he was on something.  Then a young lady came out of the house asking to use our phone.  She denied being on drugs but was paranoid and twitching all over the place.  She did not know where she was and stated she is from Pennsylvania.  She used my friend’s home to try and find someone to come and get her.  The elderly lady of the home had no idea who the girl is and said she just showed up last night.

Finally, the owner of the property came out.  She was a nice elderly lady; I would say in her 80’s.  She has two pending eviction notices on individuals living there.  However, there are some living in a shed and a tent in her yard, which have not been served eviction notices and she has not asked them to leave.  I am not sure if they are taking advantage of her or if she is just a nice lady letting them stay there.

Now to the part that brought this home to my attention, outside of the drug issues that seem to be connected to the home.  The home is one of a few that are without water.  They are on a well system and once Pulte started drilling, they started having issues with water.  The issue being, they do not have any.  A few homes on the street have city water and they are fine.  There are a few issues, outside of the fact that this elderly lady in a rundown mobile home has apparent alleged drug addicts all over her property, she has no water.  One of the lads staying there was seen taking a healthy one, in between the tent and the fence to the neighbor’s yard.  One of the neighbors overhead an individual state he was going to “take a shit” in the neighbor’s yard and he came off that property with toilet paper in hand.  The neighbor that heard him, turned on a flashlight and the lad took off.

Apparently, the sheriff’s office is aware of the home, with another arrest taking place last night.  Who knows if anything will be done about the living conditions along that street, for some of the individuals that have no running water because the wells are shot.  Again, the issue with the wells occurred after Pulte started drilling, however Pulte’s consultant has analyzed the situation and states that Pulte’s drilling had nothing to do with the sink holes or wells going dry.

I am amazed with the living conditions, which is essentially around the corner from my neighborhood of Pinebrook and just a few blocks away from the private elementary school.

Any advice for the neighbors on this street?  Many are hardworking individuals that living there, due to their financial situation.  Unfortunately, they can not afford to live anywhere else and just want to live in peace without worrying about the local drug house or stepping in their neighbors feces.
