North Port explains that they do not have a dam or levees, the issue was the erosion of a water control structure

City of North Port

You may have heard about the erosion issues that were experienced at Water Control Structure 106, located along the banks of the Cocoplum Waterway near North Port Boulevard and the Winn-Dixie parking lot, during Hurricane Ian. You may have even heard that a “dam” broke in North Port soon after the storm passed. We wanted to take this opportunity to clear up some misinformation and update you on what actually occurred then and what the City has done about it.

First: North Port doesn’t have any dams. We also don’t have any levees, and although the breech of a levee in northeastern Sarasota County was reported around this time, it had no impact on the City of North Port. We do have water control structures like this one, and they are opened to allow water to flow through. While there was erosion around WCS 106 due to Ian, the structure itself did not fail.

As soon as the storm passed, the Department of Public Works assessed the site and continually monitored it to ensure the safety of the public. A contractor was hired to address the immediate concerns, including fortifying and stabilizing the bank and reestablishing water service to the nearby area.
The second phase of work, now underway following a competitive procurement process, will complete the repairs. These include new asphalt paving, bedding stone and riprap over the next week or two.
