Sarasota County and North Port declare a state of emergency

The City of North Port declared a local state of emergency Monday in preparation for possible impacts from Hurricane Ian as it strengthens in the Gulf of Mexico.

The City Commission unanimously approved the emergency ordinance in a special meeting on Monday morning, as required by the City Charter. Declaring a local state of emergency expedites the availability of funds and resources so that the City can respond more quickly and effectively to emergency situations.

City officials have been actively monitoring the storm’s path in coordination with county and state authorities, and crews are getting City facilities and operations ready for potential severe weather.

“We are doing everything we can to ensure that the City is well-prepared for the impending storm,” said City Manager Jerome Fletcher. “We’ve been in constant contact with our partners at Sarasota County and the state, and while North Port could see significant impacts in the coming days, I’m confident that our team is ready to respond.”

Citizens are urged to take precautions now by making sure that they have a disaster kit and a family plan in place. Visit www.scgov.net/BePrepared and enter your address on the Know Your Level page to view your evacuation level, evacuation route and the nearest evacuation center. Those with qualifying medical needs are encouraged to register in advance with Sarasota County’s medically dependent program to receive transportation and sheltering at an evacuation center.

“Evacuation centers should be a last resort for those who need them,” said North Port Emergency Manager Michael Ryan. “Residents who live in low-lying areas and mobile homes should already be thinking about where they will go if an evacuation order is issued. If your home was built after 2002 and you are not in an evacuation level, you may be more comfortable sheltering in place. Now is the time to finalize your plans and know where you’ll go and what you’ll do when the storm arrives.”
