Sarasota: Backup issue leads to 600 gallons of sewage spill

Sarasota County: Early Monday morning, the on-call #SRQCountyUtilities crew responded to a report at 6500 Gateway Ave in Sarasota regarding a backup at a business. Upon investigation, staff discovered a gravity main blocked due to FOG. Crews were able to use the County’s sewer cleaning truck to jet the blockage and clear the backup. Approximately 600 gallons of sewage flowed onto the adjacent alleyway and into a nearby stormwater structure. About 400 gallons of wastewater were recovered. No surface waters were impacted. No spill sampling is required. Clean-up and notifications are proceeding per protocol.
