Dear Supporters,

As you have probably heard by now, the Venice City Council completely ignored our citizen input on our new Land Development Regulations. They made dozens of changes in recent months in order to accommodate interested developers, but they ignored OUR votes and voices. They increased zoned building heights all over the city, including downtown and elsewhere on the island. Despite so many of you speaking out in support of protecting Venice’s historic downtown, it was an astonishing example of elected officials ignoring their constituents.

We have not lost completely though, and we may be able to save our beautiful and historic downtown Venice. Several citizens have come together to file a citizen referendum which is allowed within the city’s charter, because we feel the LDR, as it currently stands, is bad for Venice. If granted, the referendum would allow the public to vote on it themselves on next year’s ballot. So this next part is up to the citizens of Venice…shall we bypass our elected officials and put it to a vote?

We will be asking for 10% of Venice city registered voters to give their signatures in support of putting the referendum on the ballot in 2023. If you aren’t a registered voter in the city, we ask for your support to spread the word and help collect these vital signatures. We CAN save Venice, and we want Venice to grow with a plan that secures our future and quality of life.

Thank you for your passion and continued support. This may be a longer fight than anyone expected, but I believe we can protect our city. Please watch for emails, as we hope to begin collecting signatures soon.

Best Wishes,

Lisa J
