Sarasota: Contractor error leads to a 5,000 gallon raw wastewater spill

Incident Description
County utility staff responded to a call regarding a contractor performing work on a development project that damaged a sanitary sewer force main located at 582 McIntosh Road in Sarasota. When staff arrived, they confirmed that an 8-inch sanitary sewer force main had been damaged while installing a stormwater structure. Crews isolated the force main by shutting off a nearby lift station. Approximately 5,000 gallons of raw wastewater spilled and made it into a retention pond on the property. About 3,500 gallons were recovered from the site. Clean-up and notification are being conducted according to protocol. Spill samples will be taken.
