Phone message from the local Democratic party leaves a Sarasota County resident with concerns that she can not vote in the Primary Election unless she joins their party

This message is in some way is correct and incorrect at the same time. It is a message from the Democratic Party stating that if you are not registered as a D or R, you can not vote in the 2022 primary election this August and goes on to urge the individual to join the Democratic Party. It is true within the party ranks. For example, Joe Nuender is going against Mark Hawkins, both are Republican’s. So, only registered Republican’s can vote in that primary race and chose the candidate that will represent them in the General election. Same goes for the Disctric 2 County Commissioner race, there are four Democrats running and only Democrats can vote for who they want to represent them in the General election against the Republican candidate Christian Ziegler. However, this message is not accurate when it comes to non-partisan elections, such as the School Board Commission. The school board race is a non-partisan race, so you do not have to be affiliated with a specific party to vote this August. I can see how this voice mail could be misleading and lead a person to believe that they can not vote in the primary election unless they join a party and in the case the Democratic Party. It certainly left anonymous a bit confused and concerned. In the November general elections anybody that is registered to vote, can vote for their candidate and can vote for candidates outside of their registered party. Thoughts?

Hello, I received a call from “Sarasota County” stating that I will not be eligible to vote unless I register as a democrat. I have the audio and the screenshots of my phone with the number. This is unreal. If you choose to use this, please keep my name private. I honestly would be upset regardless of which political party would do something like this.

The recording is below.
