We are currently working an unsubstantiated threat at that is allegedly supposed to occur tonight at the Sarasota County Fair. Our Intelligence Unit and Detective Division are following up on the information we have thus far.
The threat that we are aware of is that a group of individuals from Manatee County have targeted 3 people and are threatening to shoot these 3 people at our Fair this evening. It is not alleged to be a random event. As stated, it is a threat towards these 3 specific people not the Fair itself.
We are working with the Sarasota Sheriff’s Office to follow up all leads and information related to this situation. At this time, there is information which indicates the incident may involve the use of “Orbeez’ guns. These are toy guns that fire soft-gel, pellet projectiles. The use of these items has recently gained popularity on social media and while they are considered to be a toy, they could cause injury.
We have increased our staffing for tonight’s Fair and have requested MSO’s drone unit to assist. There will also be magnetometers at each entry point.
The Sarasota County Fair will also have private security on site as well and they have been notified of the situation.
We are taking all precautions to ensure the Fair is safe and enjoyable this evening.
