City of Sarasota:  The three artist finalists selected to create a landmark sculpture for the center of the U.S. 41-Fruitville Road roundabout will unveil their proposed concepts at an upcoming public workshop.

The three finalists – Sujin LimMark Aeling and Shan Shan Sheng –  were selected by the City’s Public Art Committee from 143 applicants via a nationwide call to artists issued last year.

The artists will present their ideas and hear the public’s input in a virtual workshop scheduled for 5 p.m. Jan. 25. To register to attend the workshop and receive a Zoom link, visit SarasotaFL.gov/our-city/public-art.

The artists will also make presentations to the Public Art Committee at a special meeting held in person at City Hall and via Zoom at 9 a.m. Jan. 27. The advisory committee will then select one finalist and make a recommendation to the City Commission for consideration.

The proposed sculptures must complement the roundabout’s downtown location and meet the required criteria detailed in the call to artists, including height, lighting, non-interactive form and the ability to meet the demands of Sarasota’s climate. The selected piece will also be submitted to the Florida Department of Transportation for review and approval.

The budget for the sculpture is no more than $175,000 and will come from the City’s Public Art Fund, which is entirely funded by developer contributions and no taxpayer dollars. The piece will become part of the City’s permanent public art collection.
