In-custody death at the Sarasota County Correctional Facility

The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office is sharing news of an in-custody death.
 
Anthony A. Smith, DOB 04/19/60, was in the custody of the Sarasota County Correctional Facility since October 2020, on drug charges from the Sarasota Police Department.
 
On Thursday evening, Smith was transported to the hospital in relation to his terminal illness. Early this morning, the sheriff’s office was notified by Sarasota Memorial Hospital that Smith passed away.
 
Based on his medical condition, detectives are confident Smith died from terminal illness however, as always, an official cause of death will come from the Medical Examiner’s Office.
