Watch: Alligator Attack Peace River leads to once in a lifetime discovery of a rare sperm whale jaw with teeth

This is the craziest chain of events we have ever been a part of. After meeting up with John of instagram.com/fossil_junkies we headed out for a fossil adventure on the Peace River in Florida. We did recover some incredible prehistoric fossils (Mammoth & Tapir) despite having absolutely no visibility. When we decided to head out for the day we met Jeffery Heim of SharkCo.com . We discussed the lack of visibility and referenced another river which had visibility a week prior. As John & I headed out the following day, we recovered 158 megalodon sharks teeth. That same day, just up the river, Jeffery Heim attempted to free-dive and was almost immediately attacked by an American Alligator. The Alligator bit into his head and arm. We witnessed the trappers attempting to pull the alligator out of the water, and after finding out it was Jeffery, we brought Jeffery back out to the location to recount the event. Jeffery told us he was wearing a GoPro, and that he was filming before the GoPro was ripped from his head by the alligator. Naturally we had to recover this GoPro for Jeffery. We suited up and jumped into the same river, in the same location he had been attacked just a couple of days before. In searching for his GoPro we uncovered a Mastodon tooth as well as an incredibly rare Sperm Whale jaw with teeth upwards of 8 inches still protruding from the jaw bone. With 20 total teeth, this is one of the most epic finds in Florida in a long time. The last time a sperm whale was found was nearly 50 years ago. We worked into the night recovering the jaw in shark infested waters. But that’s just part 1, we also came out again in a second attempt to find the GoPro, and recovered more material. The GoPro was eventually recovered, and the Florida Museum of Natural History may be sending a crew down to recover the remains of the Sperm Whale as it is of scientific importance as one of the most well preserved specimens found. They will then also be able to identify the specific species, if it is on species that has previously been discovered. All that and more will be in part 2 of this exciting short series.
