In 2022, area voters will determine if Sarasota County renews the 1% surtax to fund infrastructure projects within the county. The “penny tax” is added to the 6% Sarasota County sales tax on items such as hotel stays, merchandise, dining out, and other taxable sales. Tourist dollars account for 20% of what has been collected.

This morning, at the North Port Area Chamber of Commerce networking breakfast, Assistant City Manager Cari Branco, and Kim Ferrell, Finance Director for the City of North Port presented how surtax funds received over the past 10 years have benefited our area by funding projects such as transportation and infrastructure, schools, libraries, parks, and public safety.
