The Sarasota Police Department is investigating an officer involved shooting that happened Saturday, February 6, 2021. The officer involved is uninjured. Thoughts are with the families involved. Any loss of life is a tragedy.

At approximately 6:30 p.m., a Sarasota Police patrol officer responded to a call for service in the 2400 block of Bay Street, Sarasota. The officer responded after witnesses called 911 to report a woman screaming and shots fired in the area.

When the officer arrived, they encountered one adult, a white adult male, armed with a firearm. Preliminary information suggests the adult male shot and killed an adult white female in front of the officer.

The officer fired his duty weapon. The male is dead but it’s unknown, at this time, if the male was killed by the Sarasota Police officer or if he was killed by a self-inflicted gunshot wound. This remains under investigation.

Per Sarasota Police Department policy, the officer has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation continues. Information about the officer will not be released at this time. The Sarasota Police Department will work to release additional information in the coming days.
