Sarasota County Mosquito Management has a real mystery on its hands.

Recently, SCMM technicians were called to rural Sarasota by concerned residents who were being assaulted by angry swarms of mosquitoes, later identified as Aedes sollicitans.

Aedes sollicitans mosquitoes usually breed in tidal pools and salt marshes along the Sarasota coast, especially on Siesta Key beaches, where cord grass is found. But it is very odd to find Aedes sollicitans concentrated 20 miles inland where there is no saltwater habitat to support their larval development.

So, how did all these mosquitoes get here?
