Suspect in kidnapping, sexual assault of hospital worker arrested on the Suncoast

On January 10th, 2021, at around 7:25 am, Deputy Ronald Chandler encountered a white male subject later identified as Joel Cassio, dob 9-13 -1989 at the WaWa Gas Station, 26415 Indian Train Drive Punta Gorda. Cassio made overtures that he was in a mental crisis and needed assistance. Through additional conversation with Deputy Chandler, Cassio indicated that he stole a motor vehicle from Broward County, Florida and that vehicle was parked in the immediate vicinity.
The vehicle was located in the parking lot of Wendy’s Restaurant, 9301 Mac Dr., Punta Gorda. The vehicle was confirmed stolen out of Broward County and was taken in the commission of a kidnapping and sexual assault that occurred there.
Cassio was booked into the Charlotte County Jail on the charge of Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle and held for First Appearance. Broward County Sheriff’s Investigators were notified and are continuing their efforts regarding the Kidnapping and Sexual Assault.
