This afternoon our marine unit was dispatched to a pelican in distress on a mangrove island. Upon arrival Marine Officer Paul Joyce found the pelican hanging upside down tangled up in fishing line and hooks. With the help of a couple local fishermen they were able to get MPO Joyce to the island, which was in very shallow waters. Once the pelican was freed from the mangroves MPO Joyce transported the pelican to Save Our Seabirds on City Island, where he will be nursed back to good health. We would like to thank the fisherman that found the pelican and notified us, without their help it is for sure that it would have been a different outcome.
