A human case of the West Nile illness has been confirmed by the DOH on the Suncoast. The individual lives in Charlotte County and the fact that someone has contracted the West Nile should not be a huge surprise, since mosquito-borne illnesses are on the rise in Florida.
The DOH out of Charlotte County is advising individuals that the risk of transmission has increased and to take some precautions to limit any possible exposure. Things like drain water from garbage cans, house gutters, pool covers, coolers, and anywhere else that water collects.
Also, the DOH is advising individuals to wear clothing that covers your body when in areas that mosquitoes are present. Apply mosquito repellant not only to your skin, but to your clothing. Effective repellents are ones that contain DEET, Picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, para-methane-diol, 2-undecanone, and IR3535
