Bullying tends to be seen as a kid issue in grade school or on the playground. First, let me say that bullying is not just a kids issue (but statistically, 1 in 4 kids in school are bullied). Bullying happens in all facets of life – including social media, the workplace, in bars, and even in senior living facilities.
Individuals who are bullied are at a higher risk for having low self-esteem, engaging in drug or alcohol use and abuse, suffering from mental health issues, and have a higher rate of suicide. They may even become bullies themselves.
Adults, please remember that our children are watching and learning from us. They will emulate our behaviors. Remind them that if they are being bullied, to be SAFE:
- Say something to an adult
- Ask for help
- Find a friend
- Exit the area
Parents and children can also utilize the Bully Report System on the Charlotte County Public Schools webpage to report bullying online and anonymously.
Be mindful of that as we move into a time of year where tensions may run high due to things like political elections, sports, economic concerns, the holidays, and an overall sense of frustration due to COVID-19.
It’s OK to disagree with one another, but do so respectfully. Show our kids that we don’t always have to see eye-to-eye, but that we can still coexist and even flourish as a community.
Bullying is never OK. No one has the right to treat you as though you are not valued.
Let’s work together to make Charlotte County the standard for the country. It will take all of us doing our part, but as we often say, “Our strength is in our people”.
