5000 gallon raw sewage spill leaves a foul smell in Venice

On Aug. 26, #SRQCounty crews responding to a call about an odor on E. Venice Avenue and Lee Road discovered sewage in a stormwater swale. The spill was the result of a broken 6-inch force main caused by a stress crack. Repairs were completed that same evening.

Approximately 5,000 gallons of raw sewage spilled into the swale, and approximately 2,500 gallons were recovered. The spill did reach a waterway, so sampling is needed. The State Watch office will be notified. Cleanup and notifications were done according to protocol.
