A Saturday morning fire has left a Port Charlotte family of five homeless. The fire was reported just after 8 am in the 21000 block of Midway Blvd. between US 41 and Lakeview. The family evacuated the home before we arrived. The first unit on the scene reported heavy smoke across Midway Blvd. We were able to quickly bring the fire under control, but not before it did heavy damage to the house and contents.

Two adults and two children refused treatment, but as a precaution, one child was transported to the hospital. Sadly, six of the seven family pet cats died as a result of the fire and smoke.

The Red Cross is assisting the family with lodging. The State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
